Things To Consider When Choosing A Fence Company

With a wide variety of local companies to choose from in Indianapolis, finding the right company to install your fence can be a difficult task. You have to consider your budget, the quality of materials being used, the fence installation process, and the timing of when the fence company can install the fence.  Buying a fence is a considerable investment and can help increase the value of your house. It is essential to know who you are doing business with, so we put a list together of the top things to consider when buying a fence:
Do Your Research:
The first step in the process is to do your research. You can learn a lot about a fence company from their online presence. Reviews aren't everything, but it is an excellent place to start. Look at Google and read through some of their reviews. After that, browse through their photo galleries, fence installation projects, and read about the company. Is their website updated? Do they offer the fence style that you want? After you've done that, it's best to call the company and schedule an estimate. The first impression can reveal a lot about a company. Were they professional on the phone? Were they efficient in scheduling the fence estimate with you?
Schedule Multiple Fence Estimates:

Once you've decided on a couple of local fence companies here in Indianapolis, the next step is to schedule a fence estimate with them. A fence estimate usually takes about 30-45 minutes (sometimes longer), and the fence professional comes to your house to measure your yard and help you decide on the fence that works for you. One of the best things you can do is obtain multiple estimates comparing the exact measurements and details of your upcoming fence installation project. Doing this allows you to see the difference between the companies, and you can make an educated decision on what is best for you and your family. Sometimes it's budget, style, or durability, but you will know what's available in the market.
Professional Fence Company:
It is best to stick with companies that are fully licensed, bonded, and insured in your state and, more specifically, in the city in which you live. Choosing a fence contractor that is fully licensed is essential when going to the village to get the fence permit. The town wants to know who is doing the fence installation, and they care about that because they want to make sure the homeowner isn't getting scammed or cutting corners. Once the permit is issued, and the fence is complete, most villages require a final inspection to review the work.

Questions To Ask During The Fence Estimate

  • Material: What type of wood do you plan to use for your upcoming fence installation? Is it white cedar or red cedar? Does the fence company here in Indianapolis offer treated fence materials? How thick are the fence posts? What kind of grade vinyl fence are you using? How wide are the top and bottom rails? Etc! These are all essential questions, and they allow you to compare apples to apples with all the fence estimates.
  • Timing: How long is the fence estimate good for? If I decided on the fence today, when would you be able to install it?
  • Installation: Are the fence posts set in concrete? When removing the old fence, do the posts get dug out or cut at ground level? Will you be taking the old fence with you? What about the dirt? How long does the fence installation take?
  • Permit and Utilities: Who gets the permit, you or the fence company? Who calls the utility company to mark for cables? Who is responsible for cut cables?
  • Warranty: What is your fence warranty? What does it cover?
Timber Ridge Fence Company is the best. It’s so good to do business with a company whose employees are knowledgeable, professional and thorough. A first impression is always a lasting impression. Jason answered our many questions and addressed our concerns for our upcoming fence installation. The first question Jason asked us was: how long do you plan to stay in your home? Based on our response, he suggested fencing that will last a good number of years at an affordable cost. Thank you Jason. We are very happy with our new fence.

Timber Ridge Fence Company Materials

Timber Ridge Fence Company offers a wide variety of fence materials and styles; how do you choose what is best for you? Assuming there are no restrictions where you live in Indianapolis, whether, by the HOA (homeowners association) or village, there are several things to consider before choosing the fence you want. What is your budget? Do you need a privacy fence? Are you going to be living there for a long time and need something that's going to last? Or maybe you want the fastest fence installation date and are open to anything? Do you have a small dog that you want to contain? These are all things to consider. For this next section, we will talk through the different fencing materials and styles that we offer.

Wood Fence: The chief of the backyard! For decades, a wood fence installation has been the #1 choice for homeowners. Not only is wood fencing affordable, it always has a lot of versatility in styles and cost. You can pick treated wood or cedar-wood. You can choose picket wood fences or solid privacy wood fences. Deciding on a style of the wood fence all comes down to what is most important to you. Having a wood fence installed by Timber Ridge Fence Company is an excellent option for those looking for a long-lasting fence at an affordable cost. One of the most important questions to ask yourself is how long I will live in this house? A well-built and installed wood fence should last 10-20 years! If you plan to move within 10-15 years, a wood fence is an excellent option for you!

Vinyl Fence: The new kid on the block! Vinyl fencing not only has all the versatility of wood, but it also lasts longer! Now, that comes at a cost, literally. However, vinyl fencing is an excellent option for those looking for a long-lasting fence that gives you the possibility of privacy, picket, or decorative designs here in Indianapolis. The beauty of a vinyl fence is that the material doesn't decay from the elements. A wood fence will rot out over time, but vinyl from Timber Ridge Fence Company will not. The other benefit of a vinyl fence is that it will not fade from the sun. So, if you are planning on living at your house for a long time or want a maintenance-free fence, vinyl fence installation is an excellent option for you.

Aluminum Fence: If you are looking for an elegant fence that doesn't hinder your view and lasts the test of time, an aluminum fence is an excellent option for you. The beauty of an aluminum fence is that the material never fades, rusts, or decay. Here at Timber Ridge Fence Company, our aluminum fences are screwed together and powder coated, ensuring a long-lasting fence that can be enjoyed for decades to come. After the aluminum fence installation is complete, there is virtually no maintenance required to upkeep the fence. The only downside to an aluminum fence is that there are no privacy options, so you are better off with a vinyl or wood fence if that's what you need. However, we offer puppy picket styles for those who want/need an aluminum fence with a small dog.

We had Timber Ridge Fence Company install our 6 foot vinyl privacy fence up last year. The price was great and Nick made the entire process easy. Last week, we had some fence panels pop out due to high winds, Nick came out the next day to repair for no charge. Highly recommend for all your fence installation needs!

Timber Ridge Fence Styles

Spaced Picket Fence:

The American Dream: a beautiful house with a white picket fence! Timber Ridge Fence Company can help make that happen! The beauty of the picket fence is that it keeps your kids and pets in but doesn't block the views. We offer wood, vinyl, and aluminum picket fence installation to the residents of Indianapolis. Usually, these fences come in 4-foot or 5-foot tall (you can go taller, but that is not common). The standard gap for a wood or vinyl picket fence is 2-inches. For aluminum, the gap is closer to 4-inches. So, if you have a tiny dog, you might be better off with vinyl or wood, but we also offer a puppy picket aluminum with a closer spacing at the bottom. The other option for picket would be a semi-private. That is closer to a 1-inch space. The other thing to mention is that you can do a couple of different styles within a picket fence. You can do straight top or arch or scallop. Below are several photos that highlight the other style options that we offer within the picket family.

Solid Privacy Fence:

The beauty of a solid privacy fence is that no one can see in your yard! It allows you to enjoy your backyard and gives you peace of mind if you have kids or dogs playing in the backyard. When it comes to a solid privacy fence, most villages only let you go up to 6 feet tall. You will have to check with your local fence company, town, and homeowners association to see what's allowed. We only offer solid privacy fences in wood or vinyl. One of the most critical aspects of a privacy fence is the post itself. During the fence installation process you want to make sure the posts are set in concrete and are thick enough to withstand the wind and elements here in the greater Indianapolis area. There are several different styles of solid privacy fences you can choose from 1. Solid D.E Straight Top, Arch, Scallop (Wood only). 2. Traditional Solid (Wood and Vinyl).

Shadowbox Fence:

Here at Timber Ridge Fence Company, our shadowbox or shadow board or board on board fences are only available in wood! If you are looking for a privacy fence installation that also allows airflow, a wood shadowbox fence is an excellent option for you. One of the main benefits is that the air goes right through the open slots, which doesn't stress the fence when it is windy out. However, it is not 100% private; you can still see through the fence if you look at it from an angle. The other benefit of a shadowbox fence is that there are boards on both sides, so not only does the fence look the same from the inside or outside, it is also more robust than a solid privacy fence. Specifically, if you have a dog that likes to jump against the fence, sometimes that can be a problem with a standard privacy fence; the dog can pop off the boards. However, this is not possible with a shadowbox fence cause the boards are nailed inside and outside.

Decorative Fence:

For those looking for a privacy fence and significant curb appeal of their home in Indianapolis, a decorative fence installation might be your best option. With a decorative fence, you get the best of both worlds. Usually, these fence styles are only available in 5-foot or 6-foot heights because the top 1 foot of the fence is decorative, and the rest is solid privacy. Here at Timber Ridge Fence Company, we offer decorative fences in both vinyl and wood. If you are interested in the vinyl decorative fence style, we have three different color options; sandstone, khaki, or white. You can also do a two-tone design if you want!

Timber Ridge Fence company was extremely helpful and professional, and was able to schedule a fence installation date quickly. Their installers did a great job, finishing 400 feet of fence in one day. Jason, their salesman, was very forthcoming about our options and what would be a good value. He also supported us in contacting the village for permitting when there was a hang up. Our lot is on a highly trafficked road in downtown, so we wanted a great looking fence. We’ve gotten 20+ compliments from neighbors just over the weekend!! Thank you!!

The Fence Process

Once you've decided to move forward, then the process begins. Here at Timber Ridge Fence Company, we require a 30% deposit, and then we can start the fence process. The first step of this will be to give you a fence installation date. The schedule is constantly changing, either moving up or back, so this initial date will be tentative, but you will have your spot saved on the schedule, and we will be able to order your material. Below is a broad list of things that need to be done in order to prepare for your upcoming fence project in Indianapolis:
Village Permit and H.O.A.: This step will require you to contact the village and H.O.A. (if you have one). They will want to see the plans for the fence. Part of this will include showing them what kind of fence is being installed and where it is being installed. They will want to see your plat of survey and a drawing of where the fence is going. They might also ask for a description or picture of the fence. Furthermore, they will want to know what fence company is doing the installation to ensure they are licensed and bonded with the village. The fence permit is one of the most critical steps, but we cannot install the fence without the village or H.O.A. approvals. The last thing we want to do is install a fence that you can not have or has to be moved.
Preparing The Yard: Not every job requires this step, but it's still worth mentioning. Before the fence installation process begins, here in Indianapolis, one of the homeowner's responsibilities is to ensure that there is nothing in the way of the fence line. If any trees, bushes, or sprinklers are in the way, please ensure this is taken care of before the crew arrives. The crew will do their best to ensure that they don't ruin anything in the process, but this is construction work, so if there are any decorative items in the garden or important plants near the fence line, it is wise to move those.
Fence Installation Process: About a week before the work begins, Timber Ridge Fence Company will contact J.U.L.I.E. to ensure all the proper cables are marked. We have to do this to ensure our fence crews' safety and avoid cable damages in the process. In the event of a cut cable, which does happen, we are responsible for contacting the cable company and making sure they know of the repairs needed. When the crew arrives, they will begin to find your property lines based on your survey. Once they have your yard boundaries properly marked with string, they will start digging the holes. Most of the time, the crew will dig the holes and remove the dirt simultaneously. Once the holes are deep enough, they will begin setting the posts in concrete and hanging the fence. Most jobs are done within one or two days after the fence install has started (assuming good weather and no material shortages). The crew will finalize the job by ensuring the lines are straight and the fence is heightened correctly. They will also look over the yard to ensure that they cleaned up to the best of their ability.
